OSOMKIME BLANKSON UNITY TOURNEY KICKS OFF IN YENAGOA

The Opolo community school field was agog on Friday as the much anticipated maiden Osomkime Blankson Unity Football Tournament for Yenagoa council area kicked off in the capital city.

Thirty five teams drawn from the communities within Yenagoa are participating in the competition.

Sponsor of the tournament, Hon. Chief Osomkime Blankson, led other notable personalities from the council area, including paramount rules of neighboring communities to the opening ceremony.

Performing the kick-off ceremony, the sponsor described football as a unifier, as he expressed his delight with the teams in the tourney, as well as the massive turn out of fans at the commencement of the competition.

To the players, Chief Osomkime Blankson urged them to be at their best, but ensure they imbibe the spirit of togetherness and sportsmanship, even as the battle for the prize money at stake.

"What we are doing here is just to encourage our teeming youths to participate in football. Nobody knows where your talent is going to come from. So my advice is to do your best."

He also praised the organizers for a job well-done, adding that outstanding players will be specially rewarded.

"I want to thank this team for putting this competition together. I appreciate all you are doing. What is important is unity, Football is a unifier, is a game that does not have enemy."

"I want to encourage the teams to put in their best and win at the end of the day. Whatever we have promised to make out for the win items we will do, and as the game progresses we still identify certain players and make certain provisions that will encourage them and encourage others as well."

Paramount Ruler of Opolo community, Eniya Moneyman, and his deputy, among others, graced the opening ceremony.

The curtain raised between Famgbe community and Yenezue-gene community ended in a barren draw.

in the first half, Yenezue-gene community created several goal scoring chances, but were wasteful in the final third, while Famgbe community came into the second half with vigor, but also could not convert their chances.

Three games were played at the BDGS centre on Saturday, with Yenagoa lost three goals to two Obogoro community, Yenaka were humbled four goals to nil in the second game, while Ogu defeated Ikolo four two on penalties after a two all draw.

Games continue on Sunday, November 23, as the Kpansia centre will come alive, with Opolo facing Igbogene at 2pm while Kpansia will battle Okaka at 4pm.
