Khadijat Idris secured Kano State's first gold medal in the women’s 55kg freestyle event at the ongoing 3rd Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classics in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Umar Aliyu, the coach of the Kano State Wrestling Team, expressed immense pride in the athlete's remarkable achievement.
The coach also acknowledged the vital role of the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf in making the achievement possible.
Newlife Ebikemi emerged as stand out champions in their respective categories at the ongoing 3rd Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling classics in Yenagoa.
In the Women’s 57kg Freestyle event, three times African Champion, Mercy Adekuoroye (Ondo State) claimed the gold, asserting her dominance on the mat with a series of powerful moves in the admiration of fans.
Adekuoroye, the younger sister of world silver medallist Odunayo Adekuoroye, took Ebi James of Dynamite Club to the cleaners with 12 to 2 points in the final while Faith Esosuapo of Edo State settled for bronze.
In the men’s 67kg Greco-Roman category, Alfred Parkistan NSCDC proved his wrestling prowess by securing the gold medal. Alfred's beat Longlife Okokoro Dynamite Club by 5-0 (pinfall) in the final while Victor Sunday (Bayelsa State finished with the bronze.
Meanwhile, in the men’s 92kg Freestyle event, Newlife Ebikemi (Bayelsa) triumphed to take the gold, showcasing his skill and resilience throughout the match.
Ebikemi’s victory was one of the most anticipated moments of the tournament as he won Perezigha Obazi by technical superiority while Benjamin Setinbowei of Delta State earned the bronze.
In the absence of Emmanuel Nworie, Perefaghe Kiribein emerged champion in the 77kg men's Greco-Roman event.
Agbonifo Ehiche (Edo State) took the silver, and Nweze Kingsley (Nigeria Police Force) finished with the bronze.

Bayelsa Solomon Ulabo secured his second gold medal at the ongoing 3rd Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
Ulabo defeated former National Champion, Matthias Okuma (Edo State) 8 to 0 technical superiority in a thrilling 82kg Greco-Roman final. Ulabo won gold medal in the men's freestyle 79kg after beating Noel Ebiton Simplify on Friday.
In the Men’s Freestyle 70kg category, Tope Adebayo of Ondo State emerged victorious, taking home the gold with a dominant display.
Adebayo’s aggression and technique were on full display as he overpowered his opponents, culminating in a well-earned gold medal to add to his growing list of accolades.
In other weight categories. Dominic Nnalue claimed the gold medal in the men's 55kg Greco-Roman event while Dick Enienobodi Edo State won the gold in the men's 60kg Greco-Roman event.
In the Women’s Freestyle categories, Ebipatae Mughenbofa of host Bayelsa won the gold in the 68kg, while Dami Ojo of Ondo State took home the top prize in the 76kg category.
Hostility continue on Saturday as Mercy Genesis, Esther Kolawole and others will take on the mat to thrill spectators including Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi (MFR) and a host of top dignitaries.
