BAYELSA SPORTS MINISTRY WELCOMES WRESTLING AFRICAN CHAMPIONS
Following their victorious outing at the just concluded African Senior Wrestling Championship in Casablanca, Morocco, the Bayelsa State government, through the Ministry of Sports Development, on Tuesday received the wrestlers in Yenagoa, XtrymeSports.blogsoot.com reports.
Recall that Team Nigeria won a total of 13 medals, comprising 10 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze, out of 16 athletes that participated.
Bayelsa born Athletes, Hannah Reuben, Mercy Genesis, Ebipatei Mughenbofa, Ebi Biogos and Stephen Izolo all won gold for Nigeria while Ebikeme Newlife settled for silver and Ebierelayefa Andrew secured bronze at the championship.
The event also produced a Nigerian male freestyle African champion, a feat that has not been achieved since 2021.
Receiving the athletes in his office, Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Igali, praised them for making the state and Nigeria, as they have proved once again that Nigerian wrestling was dominating the continent.
He stated that after winning the maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival and achieving this remarkable height at the continental level, it is only pertinent for the ministry to warmly receive themnto the state.
Igali, who doubles as the President of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation, announced a reward of 200,000 naira each for the gold medals while 100,000 naira each to silver and bronze medals, while the coaches smiled home with 100,000 naira each.
He said, "I really want to applaud our athletes for the remarkable performance they put up at the African Wrestling Championships in Morocco, and of course, you can't record such performance without the support of the coaches So, I want to appreciate Akuh Purity, our Cuban coach, and all the coaches at the state level."
"As a ministry, we are rewarding you with 200,000 naira each for gold, 100,000 for silver and bronze, and silver amount for the coaches." Igali stated.
The President of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation used the medium to express his gratitude to the Bayelsa state government of Governor Douye Diri, the National Sports Commission led by Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade for their numerous support, which aided the athletes to put up a good show.
Also appreciated was the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi MFR, for his consistent magnanimity in supporting the Wrestling Federation.
In earlier address, the director of Bayelsa State Sports Council, Sir Braveman Wodi joined the Commissioner's voice to single out for praises the performance of the wrestlers, stressing that the victory is a testament and reflection of the massive sporting investment of the state government under Governor Douye Diri and his deputy Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo
Speaking on behalf of team Nigeria, Hannah Reuben who captained the contingent expressed gratitude to the Bayelsa State Government, the National Sports Commission, Nigeria Wrestling Federation and CG Adeniyi among other stakeholders which has supported the team.

Meanwhile, the reception was attended by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Grace Alagoa, Assistant Director Human Resource Management, Micheal Alakere, among other high-ranked ministry staff.
