PROSPERITY CUP: AFINI LADIES SILENCE TOURNAMENT FAVORITES CRYSTAL STARS; GOLDEN SUN SPORTS CLUB PROGRESSES

The third quarter final fixture of the ongoing female category of the Bayelsa Governor's Football Tournament witnessed a mixture of tension, suspense, anxiety and excitement as well as disappointment.

XtrymeSports.blogspot.com reports that last year's third best team, Afini Ladies, qualified for their second successive semifinal in a dramatic fashion after they knocked out one of tournament favorites, Crystal Stars Queens 3-1 on penalties, following a one all draw at regulation time, at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa.

Basking on their 13 goals to nil thrashing of Global Stars in their first encounter, Crystal Stars Queens came into the game full of confidence, and bolstering a better squad than their opponents, and from the blast of the whistle they took the game to Afini Ladies, with Mary Ayeloh and Chizzy Praise mounting constant pressure, but the resilient defenders ensure the first half ended goalless.

In the second both sides pressurized harder but the closest opportunity came the way of Afini Ladies midfielder, Favour Richmore, who had just the keeper to beat, but shot at her body instead.

Last year's highest goal scorer, Blessing Anderson broke the deadlock in the 46th minute, after a beautiful team work from the right flank, a long shot was parried by the goalkeeper towards Blessing Anderson who tapped in from close range to send fans into wild jubilation.

The celebration didn't last as Agba Praise was brought down in the danger area. The centre referee , Elisha pointed to the spot, and Praise, who scored a hat trick in her first game stopped up and converted beautifully in the 50th minute.

The game went to the shoot out and surprisingly, Afini Ladies converted there of theirs while Crystal Stars Queens could only score ones.

Afini Ladies coach, Anthony Fouye who was filed with awe commended his girls for their doggedness and resilient spirit. He admitted he was sceptical in the beginning following the intimidating scoreliine recorded by Crystal Stars Queens in their first game, however, his confidence grew after his girls put up a good fight.

Coach Sese Ebimobowei of Crystal Stars Queens on his part said he was proud of his girls despite the disappointing result. He added that his girls were over confident of themselves in the beginning which possibly cost them the game, assuring they will play better next year.

The last quarter final game was a 'one-man show', as Golden Sun Sports Club made light work of Bayelsa state school of Nursing, defeating them five goals to nil.

Afuluku Anibaraf's hat trick in the 23rd, 28th, 56th minute, Jessica Mark's effort in the 24th minute, and captain Rebecca Iwowari's header in the 31st minute separated both sides.

With the quarter finals concluded, attention shifts to the semi finals, with Bayelsa Stars Queens facing Ezuogha Academy, while Afini Ladies lock horns against Golden Sun Sports Club.
