The Senate President's U-18 Unity Cup was conceptualized in order to bring together young football talents from across the country, so as to provide a platform for teenagers to test their might, and nurse their ambitions of having a possible career in football.
The competition has become one of the most exciting, thrilling, and interesting youth football competitions across the country.
The 2024 edition had the following teams as participants: Young Stars - Akwa Ibom State, Ogboinbiri - Bayelsa state, Tarka Youths - Benue state, Qatar Football Academy - Borno state, Greatness SC - Ebonyi state, Adoration FC - Enugu State, Agbana Wonderful - Ekiti state, KIFA - FCT, Tanko Baba - Nasarawa state, Kebbi Selected - Kebbi state, Sabon Fegi - Yobe state, and, Great Olympics - Lagos state.
Greatness SC of Ebonyi state won the competition last year held at the Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Garki, Abuja, while Qatar Football Academy of Bornu state finished second, as Kebbi Selected, Kebbi state came third.
It's just a matter of ten days from today and the nation's capital will witness another frenzy atmosphere as participating teams begin to storm Abuja to battle for pride and prize money.
The second edition of the Senate President's Cup which is strictly for players under 18 years, and geared towards promoting unity amongst youths and states across the federation, imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, and most importantly, identify and develop young talents.
No fewer than sixteen teams from across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones will battle for honours, while the maiden female category will commence this year with four teams.
Slated for 7th – 17th November 2025 at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, the Grassroots Sports Federation, organisers of the competition are putting finishing touches to ensure a hitch free tournament.
In the past few weeks, Tournament Coordinator, Hon John Bassey Ekpenyong has engaged notable personalities and football stakeholders on the forthcoming competition, in order to create more awareness and attract support and partnership, and also integrating them on the essence of encouraging age grade tournaments.
Among them are Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Ahmed Ningi, GRASOF Patron, Senator Mao Ohanbunwa, Managing Director, North East Development Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, Executive Director, Operations, North East Development Commission, Abdulsalam Yahaya Ahmed, former President, Nigerian Football Federation, Alhaji Sani Lulu, former Super Eagles Coach, Samson Siasia, Executive Director, Administration and Finance, North East Development Commission, Dr Garba Iliya, Secretary, Youth and Sports Development of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, Alhaji Lawan Kolo, among others, where they all endorsed the competition, and expressed desire to throw their weight behind it.
The Local Organising Committee led by the Chairman, Senator Musa Mustafa, and Chairman, Sponsorship, Partnership & Mobilization Committee, Hon. Ali Gombe, alongside Hon. John Bassey Ekpenyong, Tournament Coordinator, in their separate remarks, affirmed their commitment towards delivering a better tournament.
Participating teams for this year are Male Teams (16) Jaguar FC – Abia state, Qatar Football Academy – Borno state, Uzodimma Babes – Imo state, Kebbi Selected – Kebbi state, Avengers FC – Delta state, Kaduna United – Kaduna state, Great Olympic FA – Lagos state, Essien Udim United – Akwa Ibom state, Intertech FA – Kano state, Agbana Wonderful Academic – Ekiti state, Amahus FA – Yobe state, Citiboi FC – Bayelsa state, Folsa Academy – Abuja, Tanko Baba Academy – Nasarawa state, Lanre Moyero FC – Ondo state, and Gamji Taraba Academy – Taraba state.
The five female teams are Elegant Angels FC - Akwa Ibom state, Young Stars Football Academy - Abuja, Horvel Prime Girls Academy - Plateau state, FCT Queens, Abuja, and Ebira Football Academy - Kogi state.
