GOVERNOR DOUYE DIRI TO BE HONOURED AT SWAN @ 60th ANNIVERSARY

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, will this weekend join other distinguished Nigerians to be honoured at the 60th anniversary celebration of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, scheduled to hold in Abuja.

The honour, according to the national leadership of the association, is in recognition of the governor’s unwavering commitment, passion, and sustained investment in the growth and development of sports — not only in Bayelsa State but across the country.

Since assuming office as governor, Senator Diri has demonstrated clear vision and consistency in repositioning the sports sector as one of the key drivers of youth empowerment and social development in the state.

Under his leadership, Bayelsa has witnessed a major transformation in the sporting landscape. The state has continued to record remarkable achievements at both national and international competitions — with Bayelsa athletes winning several laurels, championships, and recognition across different sporting disciplines.

From football to wrestling, athletics, swimming, and traditional sports, Bayelsa teams have continued to dominate the headlines, positioning the state as a powerhouse and one of the most competitive in the country.

The governor’s sports-friendly policies, establishment of robust incentives for athletes, and his administration’s deliberate investment in sporting infrastructure have earned him widespread commendation within and outside Nigeria.

It is therefore not surprising that the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has chosen to honour Senator Douye Diri with one of its most prestigious awards during its diamond jubilee celebration.

The 60th anniversary, which will bring together veteran journalists, administrators, and key stakeholders in the sporting industry, is expected to celebrate six decades of promoting sports journalism, excellence, and national unity through the power of sports reporting.

Other distinguished personalities from Bayelsa State who have also made notable contributions to sports development will be honoured alongside the governor during the historic event in Abuja.

OSOMKIME BLANKSON UNITY TOURNEY HOLDS DRAWS ***As Tournament Kicks Off November 20th Organisers of the maiden Osomkime Blankson Unity Football Tournament for Yenagoa Local Government Area have held the draws for the maiden edition of the tournament. A total of thirty five teams have registered to take part in the tourney that will kick off on the 20th of November, 2025. According to the organizers, the shift in date from September 28th to November 20th was necessitated due to pleas from players and officials owing to the incessant downpour, which will hinder free flow of football, and also deny them from showcasing their skills. The thirty five teams were grouped into four, namely Epie, Atissa, Okordia Zarama Buseni and Gbarain Ekpetiama, as sixteen teams will qualify for the Round of sixteen after the preliminary round. OSOMKIME BLANKSON UNITY TOURNEY KICKS OFF IN YENAGOA **** As Famgbe, Yenezue-gene Fire Blank In Opener The Opolo community school field was agog on Friday as the much anticipated maiden Osomkime Blankson Unity Football Tournament for Yenagoa council area kicked off in the capital city. Thirty five teams drawn from the communities within Yenagoa are participating in the competition. Sponsor of the tournament, Hon. Chief Osomkime Blankson, led other notable personalities from the council area, including paramount rules of neighboring communities to the opening ceremony.
