ZONE L NUGA GAMES KICKS OFF IN PORTHARCOURT


Preliminaries of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) for Zone L is set to commence on October 14th in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Although, initially scheduled for September 23rd-28th, the event was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, Xtrymesports.blogspot.com reports.


No fewer than ten universities will participate in the games, which will feature various sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, handball, track and field events, swimming, and so on. The participating tertiary institutions include:

1. University of Port Harcourt
2. Rivers State University
3. Federal University Otueke
4. Niger Delta University Ammasoma
5. University of Africa Toru-Orua (participating as observers)
6. Maritime University, Okerenkoko
7. Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Port Harcourt
8. Imo State University Owerri
9. Federal University of Owerri
10. Bayelsa Medical University Yenagoa

The University of Africa, Toru-Orua, located in the Sagbama council area, will be a first-time participant, and will observe this year's games, however, full participation in the competition will be in the next edition slated for Calabar, the Cross Rivers state capital, in 2026.

Master Anthony Favour, a student of the University of Africa who won three medals at the FISU trials in Jos, expressed his joy and gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and management of UAT for ensuring their participation in future NUGA games.

Meanwhile, Coach Ada Gwegwe described the university's participation in NUGA as a dream come true.

His words, "Since the establishment of the University, we've been eager to participate in the NUGA games, and without the support of the management, we wouldn't be where we are today."

"Sports play a vital role in shaping students, and I'm delighted with this development. With the present sports committee in place, I have no doubt that sports will take a new shape at the University of Africa, Toru Orua".

This year's Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA Games) will be hosted by the University of Jos from November 5th to 16th, 2025.
