The 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games concluded recently in Jos, Plateau State, with Benson Idahosa University, Edo state, emerging as the overall champions.
www.xtrymesporrs.blogspot.com reports that Benson Idahosa University topped the medal table with an impressive 25 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
According to the official medal table released by the organisers, University of Jos finished second having won 8 gold, 15 silver, 17 bronze, University of Benin garnered 15 gold, 9 silver, 10 bronze to finish third on the table
University of Africa, Toru-Orua (UAT), Bayelsa state made a notable debut as an observer and will now participate fully in the 28th NUGA Games in Calabar next year.
The games saw several notable performances, including Ekiti State University's (EKSU) Oluwaseyifunmi Igbasan, who claimed gold in the women's 1500m event, and Federal University of Technology, Akure's (FUTA) Christabel Chioma Offor, who took the top spot in the women's 400m.
A new hockey format was introduced, reducing the number of players from eleven to five, aiming to lower costs and increase participation.
Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) and University of Benin (UNIBEN) showcased their hockey prowess, with TASUED winning the men's category and UNIBEN taking the women's title.
The 27th NUGA Games served as a testament to the growing competitiveness and unity among Nigerian universities, setting the stage for the next edition in Calabar.
