JUNIOR CHRISTOPHER'S LONE STRIKE SEALS VICTORY FOR EDEPIE COMMUNITY AS OSOMKIME BLANKSON TOURNEY CONCLUDES
Edepie community has emerged winners of the maiden Osomkime Blankson Unity Football Tournament after defeating Ogboloma community one goal to nil in the final.
Junior Christopher was the hero of the day after striking from close range in the second half with few minutes left to the game.
The final played at the BDGS field on Tuesday lived up to the hype as both teams created several chances but could not convert any, with Edepie community creating most of the chances.
Substitutions for both sides changed the pace of the game in the second half, as Ogboloma community and Edepie community increased tempo and energy in finding the back of the net
However, it was Edepie that broke the deadlock, after substitute winger, Victor Ikechukwu ran from the right flank, beat his markers and crossed the ball into the danger area, and Junior Christopher was at the right position to strike home m, sending the atmosphere into a wild jubilation.
Earlier in the third place match, Igbogene emerged as the third best team without kicking a ball following the unavailability of their opponent, Kpansia community.
Technical Director of the competition, Coach Ada Gwegwe, who spoke on behalf of the Director General, commended the participating teams for making the tournament a remarkable one.
While congratulating the champions, Coach Ada Gwegwe also praised the sponsor, Chief Hon. Osomkime Blankson for hosting the competition, which serves as unifier for Yenagoa communities, and availing young lads a chance to showcase their talents.
The sponsor, Chief Hon Osomkime Blankson who was represented by Mr Obi Esue, the Managing Director of Olby Synergy Nigeria Limited, praised the organising team for ensuring a smooth competition, and congratulated all the teams that took part in the tournament, as he assured that hopefully, next year will be better.
The champions, Edepie community will take home one point five million naira, second place, Ogboloma community got eight hundred thousand naira for their efforts, while Igbogene community will smile home with five hundred thousand naira as the third placed team.
Edepie community's Victor Ikechukwu emerged as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Adianso Asomo of Igbogene community emerged as the Highest goal scorers with four goals.
The final was attended by the paramount ruler of Edepie community z His Royal Highness, Shadrach Etivie, His Royal Highness, Izibevie Max Deme, the Ebeneken of Ovom community, Vice President, Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria, YSFON, Mr Kali Gwegwe, among others.
