In line with its vision to ensure constant development of young football talents in Bayelsa state, organisers of Nigeria's most popular grassroot football competition, the Prosperity Cup has entered a partnership with one of the world's famous football club, FC Barcelona of Spain, as the spanish giants will visit Yenagoa, the state capital, for the eighth edition of the Bayelsa Governor's Football Tournament, otherwise knows as Prosperity Cup.
Aside from training and developing young players scouted from the competition, FC Barcelona will also drill no fewer than fifty (50) local grassroot coaches on modern techniques of the game.
This bit of news was let out of the bag by the organisers of the Prosperity Cup, at a World Press Briefing held in Yenagoa on Tuesday, xtrymesports.blogspot.com exclusively reports.
Director General of the Prosperity Cup, Mr Ono Akpe hinted that the organisers have entered a pact with FC Barcelona of Spain, which will see some of their officials coming to Yenagoa for the trainings, in furtherance to its commitment to upgrade the technicality of coaches, as well as ensure the young lads are sharpened for deals abroad.
Mr Akpe also revealed that a world class football academy will be built in the state that will accommodate selected players for camping and training, as observed in other notable countries, adding that the move will also help address the issue of having a formal and harmonized player transfers and deals in the nearest future.
He stressed that the Prosperity Cup/FC Barcelona deal will help reshape and remodel grassroots football in the state, and lay a path for greatness for future stars.
The Director General also noted that winners of the 8th edition of the Prosperity Cup in the men's category will smile home with thirty million naira, to commemorate the state 's thirty years anniversary, while the second position will get ten million naira, third and fourth place will receive five million naira and two million naira respectively, with one million naira set aside for consolation prizes.
Also speaking, Tournament Director, Mr Ebi Avi, said the official kick off date has been fixed for February 19th, and will be followed by programmes such as the training for coaches, match coordinators, media practitioners, and the medical team, as well as a refresher course for referees, where seasoned and recognized FIFA instructors will be in the state to retrain referees, so as to ensure quality officiating that is devoid of rancour.
Mr Avi said the competition will kick formally from Brass council area on the first of March, before moving to other local governments, with the finals tentatively slated for June 2nd.
The Director General concluded the briefing by expressing his gratitude to the state Governor, Senator Douye Diri for his unwavering dedication and commitment towards sports in general, which has seen the state witness a significant rise in sports development over the years.
He also thanked the Sports Development Commissioner, Hon Daniel Igali, the Bayelsa Football Association, the state Referees Council, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, as well as other stakeholders and partners that have worked collectively with the organizers to promote to the Prosperity Cup.
