2nd NIGER DELTA GAMES GETS UNDERWAY IN BENIN
It was all glitz and glamour as the second Niger Delta Games commenced on Friday night in an electrifying atmosphere at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the Edo state capital, xtrymeSports.blogspot.com reports.
The nine Niger Delta states - Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Imo, Ondo, Rivers and hosts, Edo, will renew their rivalries at the various sporting events, and will be look to claim the top spot when the games conclude next week.
Dignitaries were not in short supply as the leaders of the state, the region and the nation at large were present to wave at the athletes from the participating states during the traditional march past.
President Bola Tinubu who declared the Games open, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s desire towards uplifting sports, stating that the subsector remains a critical part of his administration's policy, as he praised the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, for sponsoring a laudable 'project'.
The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan- Enoh who represented the President emphasized that the Games would produce future champions, and address unrest usually experienced within the Niger Delta region.
Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr. Samuel Ogboku stressed that the competition targets amateur athletes in the region to nurture them to stardom.
Edo state Governor, Monday Okpebholo lauded the NDDC for the initiative to use sports as a means of youth empowerment, regional integration and sustainable peace in the region.
Minister Eben, Patorankin, Brain Jotter, were among the celebrities on ground to entertain the over three thousand athletes and officials from nine states of the region, as well as dignitaries and spectators during the opening ceremony.
Meanwhile, the football competition kicked off on Friday with Bayelsa and Imo playing a 2-2 draw, while Delta played out a 1-1 draw with Akwa Ibom in the men's category, as hosts, Edo thrashed Akwa Ibom 6-0, while Bayelsa lost 1-0 to Rivers in the women's category.
Other sporting events will continue this Saturday.
