NIGER DELTA GAMES: STATE AND LGA TRIALS BEGINS IN BAYELSA


In its bid to ensure the best set of athletes represent the state at the forthcoming Niger Delta Games in Benin the Edo state capital, Bayelsa on Friday commenced trials for athletes.
The state contingent emerged overall winners at the maiden edition of the games held last year in Uyo, a feat the authorities, administrators, as well as athletes are willing to repeat.
State Sports Development Commissioner Hon Daniel Igali, Technical Adviser on Table Tennis, Mr Amaebi  Stow, Director of Sports, Mr Aye Andrew, Director General New Media and Chairman, State Athletics Association, De Kola Oredipe, alongside Heads of Department in the Sports Council were on ground to witness the trials.
Athletics, Handball, Basketball, Wrestling, Scrabble and football, all began their trials.
Basketball Assistant Coach, Nnamdi Monday, said they are going on a mission to rewrite the wrong of last year where they couldn't make it to the podium.
He said "This year will not be like last year. As you can see, the trials are on, we are working very hard so that we can get a better result. We are good to go."

Also speaking, Ayibaebimoboere Christopher, a 13- year-old 100m, 200m, and Relay athlete expressed her desire to make it to the podium in Benin.
While appreciating their coaches for their efforts, 16-year-old Allison Gift, Johnbull Goodluck, and Faye Perfect, a 15-year-old 100m athlete, were optimistic of winning medals at the games.
According to Johnbull Goodluck, " My goal is to do what I have done here in the main competition and even better. I am coming to Benin, for a gold medal."
Faye Perfect, on his part said, "my target is to improve on my personal best, and not just that, to bring a gold media to Bayelsa."
Football coach, Douye Ebiede said he was working hard to ensure his team is formidable for the competition, as he commended the sponsors, urging them to keep up the good work, and ensure a better sporting event than last year's edition.
 "We have prepared so far, we have done a lot of training, we have played some friendly matches, won some and loose some. But for this year we are good to go."

The state and local government trials will continue on Saturday, with other sports such as boxing, para powerlifting, tennis, taekwondo, chess, table tennis and so on commencing theirs.
