Yenagoa Invitational Outdoor Park Volleyball Challenge Ends
Python Spikers of Rivers State have emerged champions of the just-concluded Yenagoa Invitational Outdoor Park Volleyball Challenge, following a dominant performance in the grand finale played in Yenagoa Bayelsa State.
The Rivers State side Python Spikers stamped their authority on Paradise Pillars Volleyball Club of Crossriver winning 3–1, to clinch the coveted trophy and reaffirm their status as one of the strongest teams in the tournament.
Refiners Volleyball Academy finished third.
In the Park Volleyball category, the Strongest Volleyball Team of Bayelsa State emerged champions, winning a cash prize of ₦400,000.
Bori Camp Volleyball Club of Rivers State placed second with ₦300,000, while Refiners Volleyball Academy took third position with ₦200,000.
Organisers of the Yenagoa Invitational Volleyball Challenge say the 2026 edition recorded significant improvements in performance, discipline, and overall team development.
The tournament was held in honour of the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The competition which is the third edition hosted in Yenagoa and the 11th overall, continues to serve as a platform for grassroots volleyball development.
Organisers explained that emphasis was placed on service delivery, ball reception, attacking play, proper setting, and team coordination, with focused technical improvements recorded over the seven-day event.
A major highlight of the championship was an educational grant initiative, reinforcing the link between sports and education, with 15 students benefiting in the 2026 edition.
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, commended the organisers, particularly for the educational grants, describing sports and education as vital tools for holistic development of the youth.
Twelve clubs participated in the tournament, with winners receiving ₦700,000, while second and third place teams went home with ₦600,000 and ₦500,000 respectively, alongside ₦150,000 educational grants and other awards presented to the state government, officials, and outstanding participants.
