University of Africa Female Team Set for Historic Debut at Prosperity Cup 2026
The University of Africa, Toru-Orua (UAT) female football team is set to make its debut at the 2026 Bayelsa Governor’s Cup, popularly known as the _Prosperity Cup_, as the women’s category officially kicks off on Tuesday, 21st April 2026, across four designated centres in the state.
This marks the first time UAT will feature in the female category since its introduction into the prestigious grassroots tournament.
Confirming the development in Yenagoa, the Acting Director of Sports, UAT, Dr. Timipa Igoli, expressed delight at the milestone. He noted that the university is proud to join its counterparts such as Niger Delta University (NDU) and Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), who have consistently participated in the competition.
“This participation would not have been possible without the commitment and experience of award-winning Coach Ada Gwegwe and the female team coach Mr. Raphael Abinayam,” Dr. Igoli stated. He emphasized that sports remain vital in shaping the character and discipline of students.
Dr. Igoli also commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Africa, Professor Solomon Tamarabrakemi Ebobrah, for fostering an enabling environment that encourages students to excel in both academics and sports, and called on the Vice-Chancellor for more support to enable UAT to excel in sports.
Reacting to the team’s inclusion, Coach Ada Gwegwe credited Mr. Raphael Abinayam for his pivotal role in building the UAT female team. _“This is another way to let the public know that the University of Africa is not known for academic excellence alone, but also in sports,”_ he said.
Coach Gwegwe further stressed that combining sports with education remains a powerful tool for addressing youth restiveness in society. According to Gwegwe, this is very important to the team because the University of Africa will be participating fully in the 2026 NUGA Games in Calabar.
He used the opportunity to appeal to multinationals and private sector stakeholders to invest in sports development at UAT. _“We need your support,”_ he added.
